In 1929, Airline transportation in Korea began as JAL(Japan Air LIne) delivered freights and postal packages from Tokyo to major Korean cities -Seoul, Daeku, Pyungyang. Real Korean air service started from Oct. 1948 as Korean National Airlines(KNA) started domestic flights from Seoul to Pusan. The first international flight route was Seoul∼Taipei∼Hong Kong.
KNA changed its name to Korea Airlines in 1962 and has been run by the state and Hanjin Inc. took over it and so privatized again in 1969. In Feb. 1988, before the 24th Seoul Olympic Games, another airline, Aisana Airline started domestic fligt service. As the government lifted restriction on the interantional travel, the only international airport, Kimpo Airport, got in short to harbor increased flights.
To accomodate increased fligts, the government reclaimed the sea
shore of Incheon in 1992 and Incheon International AIrport opened its service in 2001. The airport is the biggest size and has state-of -the-art facilities. As of 2001, 77 nations signed airline service convention with Korea. The transportation volume of airline service is continously increasing.
